RED PANDA EXPEDITION
A hardcore wildlife and photography expedition tracking the elusive Red Panda across the rhododendron and bamboo cloud forests of the Eastern Himalayas.
Into the Bamboo Mists of Singalila
Singalila National Park, perched along the border ridge of India and Nepal in the Eastern Himalayas, is globally celebrated as the premier sanctuary for the endangered Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens). Amidst old-growth rhododendron canopies, hanging lichens, and dense hill bamboo groves, this is pure, untamed montane wilderness.
Unlike conventional jeep safaris, this is a dedicated tracking expedition where patience, expert local field sense, and persistence are rewarded with intimate sightings. Accompanied by native trackers who know every hollow tree and feeding trail, our guests experience a genuine high-altitude odyssey backed by panoramic views of the mighty Kanchenjunga massif and Mount Everest.
Expedition Highlights
- Dedicated Red Panda Tracker Team: 5 full days of field tracking with veteran indigenous spotters who monitor panda movement daily across core bamboo zones.
- 2 Exclusive Safari Vehicles (4x4): Maximum flexibility and zero crowding. With only 3 guests per vehicle, photographers have total freedom of gear movement and rapid deployment.
- Spectacular Himalayan Birding: Superb opportunities for high-altitude rarities including Blood Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan, Fire-tailed Sunbird, Laughingthrushes, Fulvettas, and Rosefinches.
- Kanchenjunga & Everest Panoramas: Breathtaking sunrises and golden-hour vistas over the world's highest peaks along the Tumling ridge at 9,800 ft.
Important Field Notes
High Altitude & Weather: This expedition takes place at 9,800+ ft altitude. Late November brings crisp mountain air and freezing night temperatures. Accommodation consists of authentic mountain homestays/lodges chosen for their tactical proximity to the panda zones. Layered thermal clothing, sturdy trekking shoes, and warm beanies are essential.
Day-by-Day Expedition Itinerary
Strategically calibrated to maximize field hours during peak feeding windows, supported by live tracker updates across the Singalila ridge.
Arrival, Manebhanjan Transfer & Ridge Ascent
Morning reception at Bagdogra Airport (IXB). Board our dedicated vehicles with breakfast en route as we wind through Darjeeling's lower tea gardens toward Manebhanjan, the historic frontier gateway to Singalila. Here, we switch to specialized high-clearance 4x4 mountain vehicles and ascend the legendary cobblestone road to Tumling (9,800 ft).
Check-in at our mountain lodge, warm up with hot tea, and enjoy lunch. In the late afternoon, take an introductory acclimatization walk and birding session around Tumling, soaking in sweeping sunset views of the Kanchenjunga range before dinner and an expedition briefing.
First Red Panda Tracking Push in Core Panda Zone
Early morning hot mountain tea at 6:00 AM followed by breakfast. Our expert tracker team departs at first light to scan roosting trees, fresh droppings, and feeding signs across known bamboo corridors.
We drive to the designated Panda Zone in our 2 exclusive 4x4 vehicles. While staying in radio and mobile contact with the trackers, we explore scenic vantage points, photographing high-altitude Himalayan birds including Laughingthrushes, Fulvettas, and Minlas. Upon receiving the tracker call, we proceed to position for ethical, unhurried Red Panda photography. Return to lodge by evening for hot snacks, review, and dinner.
Intensive Panda Search & High-Altitude Birding
Repeat early start to capture the magical dawn light over the Sleeping Buddha formation of Kanchenjunga. With full-day field permits across both Indian and Nepal border trails, we branch out to explore secondary bamboo valleys and rhododendron groves.
Packed meals or hot lunch in the field allow us to remain in position during active afternoon feeding windows. Target bird species include Blood Pheasants foraging on mossy slopes, Fire-tailed Myzornis, and Golden-breasted Fulvettas. Return to Tumling for hot soup and an evening photography workshop.
Final Tracking Push & Targeted Photography
Our final full day in the high wilderness. Movement remains completely fluid, guided dynamically by real-time spotter reports across the valleys. This flexibility ensures we capitalize on any missed opportunities or seek out rare behavioral frames—such as grooming, stretching, or feeding on bamboo shoots.
In the evening, we return to the lodge for a celebratory wrap-up dinner, sharing portfolio reviews, species check-lists, and indelible memories of high-altitude Himalayan tracking.
Scenic Ridge Descent to Bagdogra Airport
Early morning breakfast while greeting one final sunrise across the Kanchenjunga range. Check-out and begin our descent in the 4x4 vehicles back down to Manebhanjan, transitioning to highway vehicles for the transfer to Bagdogra Airport (IXB). Arrive at the airport by afternoon with unforgettable memories and rare wildlife captures from the rooftop of the Eastern Himalayas.

Everything You Need to Know
When does this expedition take place and where is the pickup? +
The expedition runs from 24 to 28 November 2026 (4 Nights / 5 Days). Bagdogra Airport (IXB) is the sole official pickup and drop point. Transfers from other railheads or cities (NJP/Siliguri) can be organized on request for an extra charge.
What is the probability of sighting a wild Red Panda? +
Singalila National Park supports one of the highest known densities of wild Red Pandas. With 5 full days of field tracking by native trackers monitoring daily feeding territories, your sighting chances are exceptionally high. However, patience and stealth in cold mountain conditions are required.
What camera lenses and photography equipment should I bring? +
A telephoto zoom lens such as a 100-400mm, 200-600mm, or a fast 300mm/400mm prime is ideal for capturing both Red Pandas in tree canopies and skittish mountain birds. A wide-angle lens (16-35mm or 24-70mm) is strongly advised for the spectacular Kanchenjunga sunrise panoramas. Bring plenty of spare batteries, as cold temperatures deplete battery life rapidly.
How are payments and cancellations structured? +
An advance payment of ₹20,000 per person confirms your booking. The remaining balance is payable 15 days prior to tour commencement. Full booking terms, permit cancellation clauses, and standard conditions are accessible via our transparent terms portal.
