About The Expedition

Into the Realm of the Golden Bear

The Himalayan Brown Bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus) is one of the rarest and largest high-altitude carnivores of the Himalayas. Distinguished by its thick sandy-golden to reddish-brown coat and muscular build, this magnificent mammal emerges from hibernation in early spring to forage across alpine slopes and valleys.

This bespoke expedition is designed for wildlife photographers and nature lovers seeking ethical, close, and responsible encounters in the bear's native high-altitude habitat. Based at a comfortable expedition hotel and accompanied by expert local trackers and naturalists, guests navigate rugged mountain terrain in specialised vehicles suited for the altitude.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key details regarding logistics, equipment, and tracking expectations.

When is the Brown Bear Expedition scheduled and where does it start?

The expedition runs from 01 to 04 April 2027 (3 Nights / 4 Days), starting and ending ex-Srinagar Airport. Please book flights landing in Srinagar around 7:00 AM on 01 April 2027. Guests arriving earlier can travel on 31 March and stay overnight in Srinagar.

How are tracking sessions structured each day?

Each day is structured around the bears' natural activity patterns — morning and late afternoon sessions when bears actively feed, leaving midday hours free to relax at the hotel and review photographs.

Can I extend the tour to visit Leh / Ladakh?

Yes, an onward transfer to Leh can be arranged at an additional cost. Let our team know at the time of booking and we will tailor it seamlessly into your travel itinerary.

What clothing and equipment should I pack?

Early April in the high Himalayas is cold, especially in the mornings and evenings. We recommend thermal innerwear, fleece layers, a windproof and down jacket, sturdy hiking shoes, sunglasses, and a 400mm–600mm telephoto lens with extra camera batteries.
